INFP’s Ionescu says 5.8-Richter-scale-degree earthquake is part of Vrancea’s seismic activity; aftershocks not expected

October 28, 2018

The earthquake registering a 5.8-degree magnitude on the Richter scale, which occurred on Sunday morning is part of the normal seismic activity of the Vrancea area and aftershocks are not expected to occur, Director General of the National Institute of Earth Physics Research and Development (INFP) Constantin Ionescu told AGERPRES on Sunday. “The earthquake registered a 5.8-degree magnitude and occurred at a 151-km depth, with the epicenter intensity measuring 6, a pretty high one, because it was felt quite well in Bucharest. This is the last revision. The earthquake is part of the normal seismic activity of the Vrancea area. The latest earthquakes with a magnitude of over 5 degrees occurred in 2016, in September and December, also measuring 5.8-degree magnitude on the Richter scale, and in 2018, this is the largest. Aftershocks are not expected to occur. The earthquakes of this depth don’t usually have aftershocks, but if they occur, they are smaller [in terms of magnitude]. There are no aftershocks in Vrancea as they are at the earthquakes on surface. It is important that no larger magnitude earthquake occurred,” Ionescu said. An earthquake registering a 5.8-degree magnitude on the Richter scale occurred on Sunday morning at 3:38hrs, local hour, in the Vrancea seismic area, Buzau county, at a 151-km depth, the latest INFP data informed. The earthquake occurred near the following cities: Nehoiu (21 km), Covasna (35 km), Intorsura Buzaului (41 km), Targu Secuiesc (49 km) and Valenii de Munte (58 km). The earthquake occurred prior to switching to the Eastern Europe time, scheduled on the night of Saturday to Sunday, when 4:00 AM became 3:00 AM.
