57.4% of resident population had their homes connected to sewerage systems in 2021

- The population connected to wastewater collecting systems in 2021 accounted for 57.4% of Romania’s usually resident population - The population connected to wastewater collecting systems with wastewater treatment plants accounted for 56.2% of Romania’s usually resident population    A number of 11,012,187 inhabitants had homes connected to sewerage systems in 2021, with 217,917 people more compared to the previous year, representing 57.4% of Romania's resident population, according to data published on Friday by the National Institute of Statistics.Regarding the wastewater treatment, the population connected to the sewerage systems provided with treatment plants was 10,792,650 people, representing 56.2% of the country's resident population, with 252,262 people more than in 2020.The increases were determined by the connection of the population to the newly built sewerage networks, respectively by the commissioning of new wastewater treatment plants.At the level of development regions, the largest share of the population connected to sewerage systems, in total resident population, was registered in the Bucharest-Ilfov region (90.3%), followed by the Center region (69.8%) and West (64%).The lowest degree of connection to sewerage systems was registered in the development regions: North-East (39.0%), South-Muntenia (40.1%) and South-West Oltenia (44.4%).In 2021, in the urban area the population connected to sewerage was 9,714,592 people, representing 94.3% of the urban resident population of Romania, and in rural areas a number of 1,297,595 people benefited from sewerage services, representing 14.6% of the rural resident population of Romania.
