The NATO Deputy Secretary General, Mircea Geoana was asked on Friday in Galati if he runs for the presidential elections and answered that he does mix up things, as long as he has this position with NATO he deals with the Alliance’s issues.‘I’m telling it to you again, especially at such a complicated moment, my main interest is that, together with the general secretary we prepare a NATO summit in Washington, anniversary, very, very successful. And, as I said before, I don’t like to mix up things, as long as I am with NATO, I’m doing my job at NATO. If you invite me again in Galati, I’ll come with much pleasure and I’ll tell you about my plans for the future’ Geoana said, when asked if he runs and when he announces his candidacy. The NATO Deputy Secretary General, Mircea Geoana also referred to Klaus Iohannis candidacy for NATO leadership, saying that’ this is exclusively a matter for the allies’.‘The only thing we do not comment upon and is not in our powers, mine and the Secretary General’s is to select our successors. It is exclusively a matter of the allies. What I can tell you is that Secretary General Stoltenberg who presented his annual report yesterday, the tenth annual report (…)has set a very, very high bar for the skills and profile of NATO Secretary General. And this I am convinced is one of the factors that the allies are discussing’ Geoana said, when asked what Iohannis would have to do to get all the support he needs to be elected NATO Secretary General.According to him, what he knows for sure is the date when the NATO Secretary General ends his mandate.‘I understand that in Romania the presidential elections have been moved forward? That’s what I have heard, they have been moved slightly forward (…). I can tell you one thing that from the point of view of the succession for command at the NATO top, the secretary general and the deputy secretary general cannot leave at the same time. So, as for secretary general Stoltenberg the date is settled, the last day of work is 30th September, on 1st October there is a new secretary general. In my case, I will leave earlier or late’' Geoana said.Mircea Geoana visited the VARD Braila shipyard on Friday and then went to Danubius University in Galati where he launched his book ‘The Battle for the Future of Romania. The thoughts of a Romanian at the top of NATO’.
