Gold price had new record on Thursday : 323.3234 lei/gram

April 18, 2024

A gram of gold was more expensive in Thursday by 5.44 lei (+1.7%) to a quotation of 323.3234 lei from 317.8798 let, as announced by the Central bank (BNR) the day before, thus reaching a new record value.   The national currency slightly depreciated against the euro, which was calculated by BNR at 4.9740 lei, on the rise by 0.01 bani against the previous quotation of 4.9739 lei. Compared to the US dollar, the leu value went up, the American currency being quoted at 4.5556 lei, on the drop by 3.29 bani (-0.72%) compared to Wednesday, when it was 4.5885 lei.   The national currency appreciated against the Swiss franc, calculated by BNR at 5.1028 lei, on the drop by 4.32 bani (-0,83%) against 5.1460 lei, the previous quotation. The spot price of gold exceeded on Thursday the level of 2,200 dollars per ounce, when the US Federak Reserve announced there were prospects for more interest rate drops this year, which suggests that Fed ifficials are alarmed by the recent inflation advance.   Since mid February to the present day, the gold quotation went up by almost 12%, on the background of expectations referring to a more relaxed American monetary policy, an environment which usually leads to the depreciation of the US dollar but generates higher interest in gold as a refuge value, especially in the context of higher geopolitical risks. Lower interest rates from Fed are favorable to gold, which does not bring income to investors but makes other investments less attractive.
