Denial sent by French Embassy in Bucharest

April 29, 2024

The online press in Romania published articles which mention the statements made by Maria Zaharova, the spokesperson of the Russian Foreign Ministry, according to whom “France will send in April a battalion of 1,500 Foreign League militaries to Ukraine.”   These statements are complete fantasies and their takeover may consolidate the pro-Russian disinformation narratives.   In this context, the Embassy reminds that France has never announced sending troops to Ukraine and any information concerning French activity within NATO, both about the country's involvement in military cooperation with the allies, its role of frame nation in Romania or the multinational brigade at Cincu, can only come from French authorities.   Increased vigilence and a thorough source checking must be used in this period of time characterized by numerous disinformation maneuvers.
