Railway transport, 5.4 pct increase in number of passengers in 2023, freight volume down 11.5 pct

 In 2023, rail transport registered a 5.4% increase in the number of transported passengers and a 6.1% increase in their journey, compared to the previous year, according to the data centralized by the National Institute of Statistics.On the other hand, the volume of transported goods decreased by 11.5%. 48.867 million tons of goods were transported, of which 79.3% in national transport. The tariff path of goods decreased by 3.3%, with an increase only in national transport, by 1.4%.Significant ratios in the total of transported goods were registered for the divisions: coke, refined petroleum products (23%) and coal and lignite; coal and natural gas (21.1%). Regarding the course of the goods, 29.5% of the total is represented by the coke division, refined petroleum products and 24.5% agricultural, hunting and forestry products; fish and other fishing products.According to the INS, last year the journey of motor vehicles increased by 3.7% compared to 2022, and the average daily journey of passenger cars by 3.2%. The number of loaded wagons entered from abroad (thousand wagons) increased by 2.6% and the average gross weight of freight wagons (tons/train) by 2.3%. The average commercial speed of passenger trains (km/h) increased by 0.6%.In contrast, the average commercial speed of freight trains (km/h) decreased by 13.6%, and the wagons loaded on the C.F.R. network (thousand wagons) were less by 10. The average daily distance of locomotives used for freight transport (km/day) decreased by 3.4%, that of freight wagons by 3.3%, and the average static load of wagons of freight (tons/axle) decreased by 2.4%.
