Infrastructure: HiSky can now begin the operation of regular flights to Canada

May 21, 2024

The Romanian airline HiSky has obtained the foreign air carrier license from the Canadian Transportation Agency, granting it permission to operate regular flights. This makes Canada the second North American country, after the United States, to authorize HiSky to establish regular routes on its territory, following a comprehensive verification process. HiSky thus becomes the only company in Romania taking steps towards launching flights to Canada, while also owning the necessary capability to operate non-stop on this long-haul route with an Airbus 330-200 aircraft.   "When we added an aircraft with increased range to our fleet, we specifically aimed to establish these efficient connections between Romania and the most demanded destinations by our passengers. We are extremely close to the first direct flight from Bucharest to New York after more than 20 years, and the news of obtaining the license for flights to Canada supports our strategy to increase the number of long-haul routes. Canada is home to a large Romanian diaspora, but it is also an increasingly popular destination for vacations and business. Therefore, we are considering launching the first routes as soon as possible, to meet this need for direct connections between Bucharest and this country’s most popular cities," said Iulian Scorpan, CEO of HiSky.   Currently, Romanian passengers do not have any direct travel options to Canada, following the suspension, in 2020, with no announced intention of resuming flights, of the Bucharest-Toronto route, previously operated by a foreign company. With the relaunch of flights to this country, Romanians, departing from the capital, could reach the major Canadian cities, Toronto and Montreal, in about 10 hours.   HiSky is currently the second largest air transport operator registered in Romania and the only company in the country operating regular transatlantic flights. Alongside a wide-body Airbus A330 with a 14-hour uninterrupted flight range, the company also has seven other narrow-body aircraft from the Airbus A320 family in its fleet, with a total capacity of over 1500 seats.
