Mircea Geoana: I am interested in giving back all my experience and enthusiasm to my country

June 6, 2024

NATO Deputy-General Secretary Mircea Geoana, declared on Thursday, at Alba Iulia, that he was not interested in any position at Europea or international levels, but wanted to give back to Romania, one way or another, what he had to offer and what he thought the country needed.   Asked at a press conference whether he was interested in a European position, possibly on joint security topics or in that of commissioner, Geoana gave a negative answer.   “I am not interested in any 'European wallets' , I am a little ironical. I said it on other occasions too. I conclude 5 years of work as top NATO executive, I am interested in being able to give back to my country my experience and enthusiasm. I am not interested in any European positions. Nor am I interested in other international positions. I am interested in giving back to my country, one way or the other, what I can offer and what I think Romania needs,” said the present deputy NATO secretary general.   Asked about a variant of what he could give back to the country from the position of head of state, Geoana said he would discuss about Romanian policy after concluding his NATO mandate.   In his opinion, Romania is headed by a political generation “more incompetent” and politicians who do not posses the most elementary knowledge hold positions on which the fate of millions of Romanians depends.   “„The country has been and is being led by a political generation that is increasingly incompetent and devoid of true love for the country. For years, we have seen how too many politicians struggle between greed and incompetence. There are many politicians who do not know economics, do not know legislation, do not have any proven qualifications, and yet they lead governments, ministries, agencies, and state-owned companies. Politicians who have learned almost nothing in their lives, lack basic knowledge, and yet end up in positions that determine the fate of millions of Romanians. It has become almost unimaginable for a Minister or Prime Minister of Romania to speak a foreign language. This at a time when, if a leader does not speak at least English, they condemn their nation to isolation. And when these leaders express themselves in Romanian, sometimes you get the feeling that the class dunce is talking to you,"said Geoana at the debate “From the heart of Europe to the heart of Europe,” organized in Alba Iulia by “Romania is reborn” movement.   He mentioned there are many politicians and Romanian state officers who are competent, good patriots whi are trying to do their duty.   “But many of them are placed aside, removed by political oligarchy whose customs are closer to old time vices rather than the meritocracy that defines any performing, modern system in this world. Because of this oligarchy, a country born out of union is able to achieve great things is today devided and continues to struggle on the outskirts of Europe,” Geoana added.   He also said that “the huge European resources allocated to Romania have been either lost out of the incompetence of national authorities, which were not able to spend this money, or they were unevenly distributed because some parts of the country were lucky to have diligent leaders, while other parts had only incompetence and corruption.”
