World Vision: 22% of children from disadvantaged backgrounds go to bed at night without dinner

A fifth (22%) of the children from disadvantaged backgrounds go to bed at night without dinner, and two out of ten children say that their family provide them only sometimes or never enough food, according to some data published on Friday by World Vision Romania.According to a press release of the organisation, the reports ‘ Romania’s children are fed enough. School lunch and home lunch’ and ‘ The welfare of the children in the rural environment’ show that in the case of one out of four children in disadvantaged backgrounds dinner is not enough for everybody in the family.Almost a third (30%) of the children in disadvantaged backgrounds do not eat lunch at home and 28% do not have either breakfast or lunch at home.For 49% of the children enrolled in the national "Healthy Meal" programme, the food received through this project is the main meal of the day, and for 22% it is the only meal of the day, the source also reveals.   One in ten children in the village does not currently attend any educational institution. The age at which minors start smoking and drinking alcohol is under 14. 37% of teenagers miss school sometimes or always because they have to work in the household.   World Vision also claims that 28% of teenagers would not approach the authorities if they were a victim of violence. About a third say they fear they will not be believed.   According to reports, 8% of adults have chosen to stop school temporarily or permanently for one or more children to meet expenses.   Research also indicates that one in ten respondents have girlfriends/underage acquaintances who have become mothers in the past year.   World Vision reported that in 2023, it had over 376,000 beneficiaries through its programs, including over 117,000 preschoolers, over 78,000 middle school students, over 40,000 high school students, over 134,000 parents, and over 5,300 teachers.
