Gross minimum wage increases to 3,700 RON/month

July 4, 2024

The government approved, on Thursday, the Decision for the establishment of the minimum gross basic salary in the country guaranteed in payment, which provides for the increase of its level to 3,700 RON monthly (1 euro = 4.9763 RON), starting on July 1, 2024, compared to 3,300 RON as it is currently, the minister announced Labor and Social Solidarity, Simona Bucura-Oprescu, in a press release."The initiative is meant to bring a better life to employees in Romania and to reduce working poverty. The increase in the national minimum wage guaranteed in payment means bringing the remuneration closer to the level required by the EU Directive 2022/2041 on adequate minimum wages in the European Union. In addition, from the experience of the past years, the increase in the minimum wage also brought a vertical increase in the majority of wages, not only for the minimum ones," declared Simona Bucura-Oprescu.Thus, the hourly rate will be 22,024 RON/hour for a normal work schedule of 168 hours/month on average. At the same time, the increased net value of the minimum gross salary in the country is 2,363 RON, for a deduction of 300 RON, the net increase being 284 RON."In Romania, approximately 760,000 employees currently benefit from the guaranteed minimum gross salary, i.e. around 14% of the total number of active employees. 1,871,266 employees will benefit from the increase of the minimum basic salary to 3,700 RON. This does not apply to employees in agriculture and the food industry, categories for which the legal provisions in force apply," the press release states.
