Romania's chief arbitrator Deaconu appointed to World Bank's arbitration centre

July 8, 2024

Chairman of the Court of International Commercial Arbitration with the Romanian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCIR) Stefan Deaconu has been appointed arbitrator on behalf of Romania with the International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID), part of the World Bank, according to CCIR.     He is one of the lawyers who successfully represented Romania in the “Rosia Montana” trial, informs the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Romania (CCIR).ICSID was established in 1966 by the Convention on the Settlement of Investment Disputes between states and nationals of other states (the ICSID Convention)."The appointment of Mr Stefan Deaconu as commercial arbitrator representing Romania within the most powerful institution in the field, ICSID, is nothing but a recognition of the merits of probably the best professional in the field in our country. Mr Stefan Deaconu has been the chair of the Court of International Commercial Arbitration with CCIR, since 2015, being unanimously re-elected in September 2023. Last but not least, we should remind the public opinion that Mr Stefan Deaconu is part of the team of lawyers who managed to avoid a real financial catastrophe for Romania, and I mean here the Rosia Montana trial. I am firmly convinced that Mr Stefan Deaconu will successfully represent Romania at ICSID, knowing closely both its hard work and the professionalism with which he deals with each case," according to CCIR Chairman Mihai Daraban.
