ANRE: The tariff surge for system services by 40% will have little effect on bills

July 11, 2024

The increase in the tariff for the purchase of system services will have a small effect on the electricity costs borne by the users, in the case of an annual household consumption of 1 – 1.5 MWh, the increase in the annual bill being a maximum of 3.7 – 5.5 lei/ year, informs the National Energy Regulatory Authority (ANRE).   “The tariff increase for the purchase of system services is 3.67 lei/MWh, from 9.17 lei/MWh, valid for the period January 1-May 31, 2024, to 12.84 lei/MWh (about 40% – n.r.) , valid from June 1, 2024. Considering the very small share of the tariff for the purchase of system services in the final price billed to users, the increase in the tariff for the purchase of system services will have a small effect on the electricity costs borne by users In the case of an annual household consumption of 1-1.5 MWh, the increase in the annual bill as a result of the increase in the tariff for the purchase of system services will be a maximum of 3.7-5.5 lei/year, respectively 31 money/month – 46 money/month. The tariff increase has no effect on the bills of household consumers, for which the price of electricity is capped”, states ANRE.   According to the source cited by Agerpres, the tariff for the purchase of system services covers the costs of Transelectrica S.A. with the acquisition of capacity reserves, which is carried out in a competitive regime, respectively from the market of system services, from qualified service providers. The purchase of these services is mandatory to ensure the operation of the electric power system in safe conditions. Between April and May 2024, purchase prices for capacity reserves registered a significant increase compared to 2023 and the first quarter of 2024, ANRE emphasizes.   “This increase led to a significant increase in the costs of the transport and system operator compared to the costs forecasted on January 1, 2024, a forecast based on historical data. Thus, the difference between the costs of purchasing capacity reserves realized in the months of April-May and those forecasted rose to the level of approximately 75 million lei. The increase in the tariff for the purchase of system services ensures the recovery by Transelectrica S.A. of the above-mentioned difference, until the end of 2024,” the regulatory authority said.
