Romania ranks second in EU after France on grain exports, leads in corn production

Romania still ranks second largest European grain exporter, after France. Local farmers and traders delivered more than 10.6 million tonnes outside the EU in the 2023-2024 commercial year, compared to 8.1 million tonnes a year ago. Over 23% of the 45.6 million tons of grain that left the borders of the community left Romania.   Romania’s exports of wheat, common wheat flour – grain equivalent, durum wheat, durum wheat flour – grain equivalent, barley, malt – grain equivalent, corn increased in the 2023/2024 marketing year (1.07.2023-30.06 .2024) by 30.8% over 2022, to 10.6 million tons, which places Romania again in second place after France, which marked deliveries of 13.6 million tons.   This year, the EU exported a total of 45.6 million tons, compared to 42.6 million tons of cereals the previous year, of which over 23% came from Romania.   Poland follows, with 5.3 million tons, which this year surpassed Germany, which delivered 5.1 million tons across the EU borders, in the context in which the exports of sorghum, oats and rye, which are zero in the case of Romania.   This year, the EU exported a total of 45.6 million tons, compared to 42.6 million tons of cereals the previous year, of which over 23% came from Romania.   By cereal category, Romania remains the largest exporter of corn, with 2.7 million tons compared to 2 million the previous year, out of the 3.9 million tons delivered by the EU. We are also, as last year, the second largest exporter of common wheat, after France (9 million tons). Romania’s exports reached 6.3 million tons, being 36.9% higher than in 2022-2023, out of a total achieved by the European community of 31 million tons.   Out of the 10.6 million tons exported, over 1.2 million tons were of barley, (vs 1.2 million tons the previous year), 6,339 tons of wheat flour (vs 5,400 a year ago ) and 21,940 tons of malt (vs. 2,130 tons of malt a year ago). We thus increased our position among barley exporters to second place after France (3.2 million tons) and this because Germany exported only 910,000 tons compared to 1.5 million tons a year ago.
