Government debt rises to 52.1pct of GDP in April

   Public administration debt (government debt) rose to 852.816 billion lei in April 2024 from 845.098 billion lei in the previous month, according to data published by the Finance Ministry (MF).As a percentage of GDP, government debt increased to 52.1%, from 51.6% in March (GDP according to the release of the National Institute of Statistics on July 8, 2024).In the fourth month of the year, medium- and long-term debt increased to 801.984 billion lei from 795.023 billion lei in March, and short-term debt increased to 50.832 billion lei from 50.075 billion lei in the previous month.Most of this debt, 691.361 billion lei, was represented by government securities. Loans amounted to 147.119 billion lei.Debt in national currency amounted to 412.36 billion lei, that in euro to 354.577 billion lei equivalent, and debt in US dollars to 84.68 billion lei equivalent.The debt of the central general government had also reached 831.166 billion lei in April 2024, up from 823.396 billion lei in March, of which 780.367 billion lei in medium and long-term debts. Most of the central government debt was contracted in lei (395.39 billion lei) and in euro (349.898 billion lei equivalent).Local public administration debt decreased to 21.65 billion lei, from 21.702 billion lei in the previous month, of which 21.617 billion lei in the medium and long term.At the same time, the domestic debt of the general government amounted to 424.193 billion lei (25.9% of GDP) in April 2024, of which 407.396 billion lei was central government debt and 16.8 billion lei local government debt.According to MF data, the external debt of the public administration amounted to 428.623 billion lei (26.2% of GDP), of which 423.77 billion lei external debt of the central public administration and 4.853 billion lei external debt of the local public administration.
