Romania receives 260 million euros from the European Commission for three infrastructure projects, according to a statement by MEP Adina Valean, former European Commissioner for Transport. A first project that received funding is Fast Danube 2, which will improve the navigability conditions on the common Danube sector of Romania and Bulgaria. The project was submitted by the Autonomous Directorate of the Lower Danube River Administration Galati, and the exact amount of funding is 195,499,818 euros. “The Danube was a priority in my mandate as transport commissioner and I am glad that a project that has been in the works for many years, Fast Danube 2, has finally been successfully submitted and financed by the European Commission with almost 200 million euros. Completion of this project would ensure a minimum period of 340 days per year of navigability. Improving navigability on the Danube is more necessary than ever, taking into account the new geopolitical realities in Eastern Europe”, said Adina Valean, quoted in the press release. According to a second project, the sum of 45 million euros was granted for the rehabilitation of the Valea Calugareasca – Buzau railway. “Another project financed in this last call for projects from the funds of the Mechanism for the Interconnection of Europe is the rehabilitation of the railway Valea Calugareasca – Buzau. The amount granted is 45 million euros,” Valean said. The third project is the one through which Romania, together with the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine, receives almost 14 million euros for the improvement of the infrastructure at the Galati, Giurgiulesti, Reni customs. The European Commission selected 134 transport projects in this call for projects, from 408 applications, most of them being railway and navigable waterways projects.
