Construction works dropped by 1% in EU and by 0.9% in the euro zone in May, against the previous month, when a stable level was recorded in EU and a decline of 0.4% in the euro zone, according to data released by Eurostat on Thursday. In EU member states, the most singificant advance of construction works in May, compared to April, was in Finland (1.9%), Bulgaria (1.1%), Belgium and Spain (0.3%), while the most significant decline was in Czechia (minus 5.1%), Romania (minus 4.1%) and Hungary (minus 3.8%). In May 2024, against the same period of 2023, construction works dropped by 2.5% in EU and by 2.4% in the euro zone. The most singificant decline of construction works in May against the same period of 2023, wa in Sweden (minus 7.5%), Slovenia (minus 7.4%) and Germany (minus 7%), while increases were recorded in Hungary (7.3%), Bulgaria (4.4%) and Denmark (1.1%). Romania reported an annual decline of 1.6%, after an advance of 12.3% in April, according to Eurostat. According to data released by the National Statistic Institute (INS) in May 2024 the volume of construction workd dropped by 2.9% as gross series in Romania but grew as adjusted series by 1.7%. INS data show that at comparative level May-April 2024, the volume of construction works went up by 0.5% due to new construction works (+2.9%) and capital repair works (+2.1%). On the other hand, as adjusted series, construction works dropped by 4.2% because of drops in maintenance and current repair works (-16%), capital repair works (-9.8%) and new construction works (-1.4%).
