President Iohannis pleads for cooperation in energy field, at meeting of European Political Community

August 15, 2024

President Klaus Iohannis, present on Thursday at the fourth meeting of the European Political Community, held in Great Britain, pleaded for cooperation in the field of energy and for the continuation of the support given to Ukraine, the Presidential Administration informed. The Romanian head of state participated in the discussions in a restricted format within the working group on "Energy and connectivity", in continuation of the discussions on the same topic, co-chaired by Romania and Norway at the meeting in Granada.According to a press release, in his intervention Klaus Iohannis showed that efforts to strengthen cooperation in the field of energy and connectivity "represent essential objectives for strengthening national and European resilience, in a context marked by the challenge of climate change management, but also developments such as those in Ukraine, which reconfirmed the need for action to limit strategic dependencies".In this context, the president highlighted Romania's efforts in supporting these fields, as well as the role of our country at the regional level, including through a more active involvement in the Black Sea projects. He also emphasized the importance of strengthening energy connections at the national and regional level and the development of the energy infrastructure, which can have a major contribution to the consolidation of energy independence at the European level.Klaus Iohannis referred to the objective of developing the interconnections between the national natural gas transport system and similar systems in countries such as Bulgaria, Hungary and Austria and also advocated the need for active support of connectivity in the relationship with Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova, both to strengthen their resilience and to facilitate their integration in the context of the recent launch of EU accession negotiations with the two states. The President of Romania reiterated our country's support for the achievement of the objectives of the transition to climate neutrality, in which context he highlighted the need for the joint promotion of innovative and sustainable solutions to ensure energy supply and to strengthen European energy security. On the sidelines of the meeting, a meeting of the leaders from Romania, Great Britain, Poland, France and Germany took place with the Republic of Moldova's president Maia Sandu. The leaders congratulated the Republic of Moldova for the reforms carried out in the recent period and for the start of the accession negotiations to the European Union, for the firm commitment on the path of European integration and for the resilience demonstrated in the context of the external pressures exerted as a result of the Russian war of aggression in Ukraine. At the same time, they reaffirmed their decision to continue supporting the Republic of Moldova in its goals regarding peace, prosperity and democracy, the quoted source informs.
