Romania's coverage with fibre optic technologies capable of providing broadband electronic communications services of at least 1 Gbps is exceeding 93%, according to a survey by ANCOM on determining local coverage area of fixed public electronic communication networks, capable of providing broadband electronic communications services. From providers' reports, based on which the survey was conducted, it also appears that the population of 1,635 settlements does not have access or has partial access to broadband internet services, with most of these settlements being in the counties of Alba and Hunedoara, ANCOM says in a press statement released on Monday.According to the survey, the local coverage with fibre-to-home FTTH/B technologies in Romania is exceeding 93%. The next technologies that enable broadband internet provision are DSL communication technologies with a coverage of over 33%, fixed wireless communication technologies, with a coverage of over 29% and Data Over Cable Service Interface Specification DOCSIS 3 communication technologies with a coverage of over 22%.After processing the information received from providers regarding the maximum download speeds nationwide, it emerged that speeds greater than or equal to 1000 Mbps can be reached in over 93% of the settlements in Romania. The settlements not covered with 1000 Mbps and higher internet are generally concentrated in geographical areas with more difficult physical access, mountainous areas within the Carpathian arc, areas in the Danube Delta or in isolated rural settlements in hilly and plain areas.ANCOM is an organisation that promotes the interests of service users by promoting competition and innovation in the electronic communications and postal services markets, pro-competitive management of limited resources (radio spectrum, numbering resources and associated technical resources), encouraging efficient investments in networks and infrastructures and promoting ultra-fast connectivity.
