United States Approves Sale of AIM-120 AMRAAM Missiles to Romania

September 19, 2024

By U.S. Mission Romania     The United States has approved the sale of AIM-120 AMRAAM missiles to Romania to provide advanced air-to-air capabilities for Romania’s Air Force. The initial sale is valued at approximately 180 million U.S. dollars, with the option to purchase additional missiles in the future.   This sale builds on the Romanian Air Force modernization effort, with the AIM-120 missiles compatible with Romania’s F-16 aircraft as well as other U.S. and NATO aircraft including the F-35.   U.S. Ambassador to Romania Kathleen Kavalec congratulated Romania for this important acquisition, which she noted will substantially increase the Romanian Air Force’s ability to defend Romanian territory and contribute to peace and stability in the region. Recalling her recent visit to the 86th Air Base in Borcea, she commented,   “I was truly impressed to see Romanian F-16’s in action. This acquisition demonstrates the Romanian government’s strong commitment to security and defense.”
