Siegfried Muresan, appointed chief negotiator for future EU multiannual budget in the European Parliament

September 17, 2024

Liberal MEP Siegfried Muresan, from the European People's Party group in the European Parliament, was appointed chief negotiator for the future EU multiannual budget, post 2027, by political groups, a press release of his office informs.   The EU multiannual budget extended for 7 years, has a about 1.3 trillion euros and is the intrument from which Romania receives most of European nonrefundable funds for investments and farm subsidies. From the present multiannual financial exercise, 2021-2027, Romania benefits about 46 billion euros, which means 16.5% of the country's GDP.   Siegfried Muresan is the first Romanian MEP holding that position. “The elaboration of the EU multiannual budget for the next 7 years will be the most important decision made by the present EP legislature. That is why I am happy to have received this important role and I thank my colleagues for appointing me.In this important legislative work I will use my whole experience gained at chief negotiator of EU annual budgets of 1028 and 2024, as well as as chief negotiator of the EU Recovery and Resilience Facility of 800 billion euros, which also finances Romania's National Plan of Recovery and Resilience,” said Muresan.   He pointed out that, as Romanian MEP, his main purpose will be to defend Romania's interests and obtain the highest possible level of European funds for this country. The liberal MEP mentions that “it is important to offer adequate financing to traditional EU priorities, such as agriculture and cohesion. The adequate financing of agriculture is needed to guarantee Europe's food safety. Cohesion is the main instrument to reduce economic differences among member countries. We still need these policies in Europe. They are very important politicesespecially for Romania and I will defend them in negotiations. At the same time we must make sure that the future multiannual busget is better prepared t finance unforeseen crises, such as the beginning of war in Ukraine.”   Last but not least, Muresan considers that “in the context of new objectives in the EU extension policy, we mus make sure that we have adequate resources to back new candidate states, such as Moldova and Ukraine.”   Owing to the high importanceof this file, there will be two EP chief negotiators. Muresan was appointed negotiator by the EPP group and in the near future a negotiator will be appointed by the European Socialist group, the second largest in the European legislative.
