Israel Philharmonic, Zubin Mehta, Argerich & Batiashvili In Bucharest

October 17, 2024

In 2024, Romania will mark 145 years since the first Jew became a Romanian citizen. A fundamental stage in the constitution of the modern Romanian State, this process was part of a long national effort, which created the unique link between Romania and the Jewish Communities that exist on its territory.   In this context, the Federation of Jewish Communities in Romania and the Government of Romania are organizing a series of events dedicated to this unique moment between September 29-30, 2024.   The Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, one of the most important orchestras worldwide, will offer two extraordinary concerts in Bucharest, under the baton of Maestro Zubin Mehta, with the participation of violinist Lisa Batiashvili and pianist Martha Argerich as soloists. The two events will take place on September 29 at the Romanian Athenaeum and September 30, at the Palatului Hall, being organized by the Federation of Jewish Communities in Romania. On Sunday, September 29, 2024, from 7:30 p.m., an exceptional recital will be held at the Romanian Athenaeum by the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, led by Maestro Zubin Mehta, with the well-known violinist Lisa Batiashvili as soloist.   The program of the evening will include the Concert op. 35 in D major for violin and orchestra and Symphony No. 4 by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky.   On Monday, September 30, 2024, starting at 7:30 p.m., the concert by the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra will take place at the Palace Hall, with Maestro Zubin Mehta at the lectern, with one of the most important and beloved pianists as soloist of the world, Martha Argerich.   The program of the evening will include Concert no. 1 op.15 in C major for piano and orchestra by Ludwig van Beethoven and Symphony No. 4 by Anton Bruckner.   The Israel Philharmonic Orchestra was founded in 1936 by Bronislaw Huberman, and the inaugural concert, which took place on December 26, 1936, was conducted by Arturo Toscanini. IPO – Israel Philharmonic Orchestra is one of the most famous philharmonic orchestras worldwide. Over time, the orchestra has had the world’s greatest conductors and soloists by its side.   Zubin Mehta (b. Bombay, 1936), is one of the most important conductors of the world. With an international career spanning over 65 years, Mehta has been invited since 1961 to conduct the Vienna and Berlin Philharmonic Orchestras, as well as the Israel Philharmonic, orchestras with which he is proud to have collaborated for over 50 years.   Music director of the Montreal Symphony Orchestra (1961-1967) and the Los Angeles Philharmonic (1962-1978), in 1977 he was appointed music director of the Israel Philharmonic, of which he became music director for life in 1981. In October 2019 he stepped down from the board after more than 50 years and was appointed director emeritus. In 1978 and for 13 years, the longest period in the orchestra’s history, Zubin Mehta became Music Director of the New York Philharmonic, and from 1985 to 2017 he was appointed Principal Conductor of the Orchester del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, of which Honorary Director for life is to date. Master Zubin Mehta is the Honorary President of the George Enescu International Festival and Competition.   Martha Argerich was born in Buenos Aires (Argentina), and took her first piano lessons at the age of five with Vincenzo Scaramuzza. Considered a child prodigy, it wasn’t long before she started giving regular concerts and recitals. In 1955, he moved to Europe and continued his studies in London, Vienna and Switzerland with Bruno Seidlhofer, Friedrich Gulda, Nikita Magaloff, Dinu Lipatti and Stefan Askenase. In 1957, she won both the Bolzano and Geneva Piano Competitions, and in 1965 he continued with the International Chopin Competition in Warsaw. Since then, she has been considered one of the world’s foremost female pianists, both in skill and popularity.   Despite the fact that her nature often led her to masterpieces of virtuosity from the 19th and 20th centuries, Martha Argerich maintains an extensive repertoire, which includes, but is by no means limited to, the works of Bach, Bartók, Beethoven and Messiaen, as well as Chopin, Schumann, Liszt, Debussy, Ravel, Franck, Prokofiev, Stravinsky, Shostakovich and Tchaikovsky.   Martha Argerich has recorded for EMI, Sony, Philips, Teldec and DGG, with many of her performances broadcast on television worldwide. She also received numerous Grammy awards and the Gramophone Award for Artist of the Year.   Lisa Batiashvili is one of the world’s greatest violinists. Acclaimed for her virtuosity by both public and professional critics, multiple award-winning, Batiashvili has developed long-standing relationships with the world’s leading orchestras, conductors and musicians.   She was artist-in-residence at the Berlin Philharmonic, and now her concert schedule includes collaborations with the Tonhalle Zürich Orchestra (conductor Paavo Järvi), the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra Amsterdam (conductor Klaus Mäkelä), the Orchestra dell’Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia (conductor Daniel Harding) and the London Symphony Orchestra (conductor Antonio Pappano).   Tickets for these events can be purchased online, from the www.eventim.ro platform, but also in physical form, from the Carturesti Bookstores, Humanitas Bookstores, Carrefour or Good2Go stores.
