Government debt drops in June to 860.13 billion RON, namely 51.4 pct of GDP

Public administration debt (government debt) fell to 860.132 billion RON in June 2024 from 862.344 billion RON in the previous month, according to data published by the Ministry of Finance.As a percentage of GDP, government debt fell slightly to 51.4%, from 51.5% in May (GDP according to the release of the National Institute of Statistics on September 6, 2024).In the sixth month of the year, medium- and long-term debt declined to 809.139 billion RON from 810.612 billion RON in May, while short-term debt fell to 50.993 billion RON from 51.731 billion RON in the previous month.The bulk of this debt amounting to 720.887 billion RON, was government securities. Loans amounted to 123.67 billion RON.Debt in national currency amounted to 402.655 billion RON, that in EUR to 371.376 billion RON equivalent, and debt in US dollars to 84.946 billion RON equivalent.The debt of the central general government had also reached 838.528 billion RON in June 2024, down from 840.798 billion RON in May, of which 787.5 billion RON in the medium and long-term. Most of the central government debt was contracted in RON (385.5 billion RON) and in EUR (366.93 billion RON equivalent).Local government debt rose to 21.603 billion RON from 21.546 billion RON in the previous month, of which 21.571 billion RON in the medium and long-term.At the same time, in June 2024, the general government domestic debt amounted to 415.229 billion RON (24.8% of GDP), of which 398.21 billion RON was central government debt and 17.018 billion RON local government debt.According to MF data, the external debt of the public administration stood at 444.9 billion RON (26.6% of GDP), of which 440.317 billion RON the external debt of the central public administration and 4.585 billion RON the external debt of the local public administration.
