US Embassy in Romania: Potential threat against religious institutions

November 12, 2024

The Embassy of the United States of America in Romania warns its citizens on its official website of potential threat against religious institutions, from Friday through Sunday, a context in which the Romanian Intelligence Service (SRI) points out it has not increased the terrorist alert level in Romania. The U.S. Embassy has been made aware of threats potentially targeting a synagogue, temple, or mosque in Romania for the October 11-13 weekend. The Embassy urges U.S. citizens to exercise increased caution near religious institutions in Romania for this period," reads a message the diplomatic mission posted on its website on Friday.Spokesman of the Romanian Intelligence Service Ovidiu Marincea said that the authorities' attention will be increased and evoked the international context and religious events at the end of the week."Currently, the Romanian Intelligence Service has no data and information that could lead to the request to increase the terrorist alert level, but, taking into account the international security context and the religious events taking place this weekend, SRI together with the relevant structures and with all other structures and institutions of the national defence, public order and national security system will obviously show an increased attention to preserve the state of security in Romania," he said. The Interior Ministry (MAI) also said on its official website that this weekend will be on duty "increased troops to ensure an optimal climate of public order and public safety.""Thus, the police, gendarmes, border police, together with institutional partners, will be on the streets, with special attention being paid to areas where religious ceremonies, places of worship and places with large crowds, for the safety of all citizens," said the representatives of the Interior Ministry. Moreover, they call on people who notice possible breaches of the law to notify the structures in charge through the single emergency number 112 or, if necessary, the nearest team of the Interior Ministry.
