Romania needs many heat pumps to reach decarbonisation target

November 14, 2024

Romania needs a lot of heat pumps in the coming years to achieve its decarbonisation target in the heating and cooling sector, Sorin Elisei, director general at the Ministry of Energy, told a specialist event on Wednesday."On the electricity side, we are starting to do well. In 2030, Romania has an 87% reduction in emissions in the energy sector as against 1990 - and that is largely due to the "coal fault", so to speak, the elimination of coal, just as we set our targets under the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNNR)," Elisei told a ZF ESG 2024 conference on the pillars that underpin sustainable investments and how to build sustainable businesses. In his opinion, carbon capture and storage could be something that Romania could take advantage of, offshore rather than on-shore, but also an opportunity that is directly linked, for example, to the cement industry."We will need a lot of heat pumps in the coming years to be able to achieve our decarbonisation target in the heating and cooling sector. We see how other countries have attracted investment in factories - and that's what I think we should be moving towards. As Mr Fechet [environmental minister] said about investing in a glass factory, we should reach out to producers of net zero technologies. The renewable part for which billions and billions of euros have been allocated is on a good track."Minister Fechet said on Wednesday that funding sources are currently being sought at government level in order to attract investment to Romania for glass processing, given that the glass industry is one with a high added value that involves very high investments and operating costs.  (Photo:https://www.myclimate.org/)
