Romania imported by 6.2pct less natural gas in January-August 2024 against the same interval in 2023

Romania imported a quantity of natural gas of 1.186 million tonnes of oil equivalent (toe), in January-August 2024, by 6.2pct (-77,900 toe) less than in the similar period last year, according to the data centralized by the National Institute of Statistics (INS).The domestic production of natural gas totaled, in the mentioned period, 5.056 million toe, being 1.4% above that of the period January-August 2023 (+69,000 toe).According to the estimates of the National Commission for Strategy and Prognosis, the production of natural gas would increase in Romania, between 2024 and 2027, with an average annual rate of 1.7%, after an advance of 1.4% recorded in 2023.Thus, according to the latest Forecast of the energy balance, Romania will have a production of 7.675 million tonnes of oil equivalent in 2024, up by 0.6%, 7.79 million toe (plus 1.5%) in 2025, 7.907 million toe (plus 1.5%) in 2026, and 8.176 million toe (plus 3.4%) in 2027.As far as imports are concerned, Romania is forecasted to have an increase of over 10% in 2024, after which a downward trend is expected, with a more pronounced rhythm in the horizon of 2027 (-6%), in concordance with the advance of production through the entry into operation of new capacities, but also taking into account the transit to be maintained to foreign markets.CNSP estimates for 2024 imports of 2.392 million toe (plus 11.1%), for 2025 imports of 2.211 million toe (minus 7.6%), for 2026 imports of 2.150 million toe (minus 2.7%) and for 2027 imports of of 2.022 million toe (minus 6%).
