Romanian, Moldovan energy ministers sign Memorandum of Understanding

November 28, 2024

The minister of energy, Sebastian Burduja, on Thursday signed in Chisinau a memorandum of understanding with his counterpart from the Republic of Moldova, Victor Parlicov, on the development of joint projects and partnerships to promote innovation in the energy field, in the two countries, informs a press release of the Ministry of Energy sent on last Friday."This step means the continuation of a process that Romania has been dedicated to: that of being a partner of the Republic of Moldova, for the consolidation of its energy security and its integration into the European energy market. Within this process, Romania is already concretely and constantly supporting the Republic of Moldova in the energy field, through ongoing strategic projects, such as the Iasi-Ungheni-Chisinau gas pipeline, the Suceava-Balti power line, but also through the supply of energy when Moldova needed it more and more in recent years. Romania now has a new opportunity through the access of Romanian start-ups to the testing ecosystem in the Republic of Moldova, where there is already a sandbox-type legislative framework that allows companies to apply new solutions in a controlled environment," said the minister of energy, Sebastian Burduja, quoted in the press release. The memorandum aims to identify the needs of the industry at the national and regional level from the perspective of green technologies and innovation, as well as the identification and development of programmes or pilot projects in which the priorities in the field of energy innovation and the development of green technologies can be addressed in a sustained manner. At the same time, the document refers to the analysis and identification of options to support investments in significant technological solutions, which will propel the clean technologies industry and influence the energy sector at a regional level, as well as the creation of strategies based on good practices from Romania and the EU, which resulted in the financing of investments in the field of green energy. To this end, the participants will collaborate with priority in order to develop projects and initiatives that support innovation, in particular, for the following areas: digital and intelligent solutions for Cleantech; advanced renewable energy; comprehensive ecosystem for green hydrogen; the next generation of technologies for the management of carbon emissions (CCU/CCS); energy storage; Urban Eco-Friendly infrastructure; energy efficiency; green and energy efficient heating-cooling systems; CyberSec projects for energy infrastructure; advanced biofuels; biomass and nuclear energy. The new memorandum continues the two memorandums of understanding signed between the governments of the two countries, the one of February 11, 2022, regarding cooperation in the field of energy security, and the one of December 11, 2023, regarding the realization of the projects necessary to interconnect the natural gas and electricity networks between Romania and the Republic Moldova, both signed also in Chisinau.
