PM Ciolacu: Increasing defence budget to 3 pct of GDP is not a necessity

December 3, 2024

Increasing the defence budget to 3% of GDP in the coming period is not a necessity, as the number one priority for Romania at the moment is to cover infrastructure investments through European funds and the National Recovery and Resilience Plan, Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu said on Monday, during his working visit to EURONAVAL 2024, the world's leading naval defence exhibition taking place at the Paris Nord Villepinte Exhibition Centre in Paris, Monday 4 to Thursday 7 November."It is not a necessity, I believe that the number one priority for Romania at the moment is to cover investments in infrastructure through European funds and through the PNRR. Moreover, you have seen a new approach and with a new direct loan from the US Government and after the gesture made by Romania with the donation of a Patriot system, several countries have already come to Romania's aid to cover that amount, and I think it is covered at the moment. So, we have a much better approach," emphasized Marcel Ciolacu, after his visit at EURONAVAL 2024.Asked whether he will increase the defence budget to 3% of GDP in 2026, Ciolacu expressed his conviction that the future prime minister will give an answer on this issue."I firmly believe that the future prime minister will have his own vision. What I would like from the future prime minister is to have a multiannual budget, for all four years, based on the European Commission's budget system," Ciolacu said.Prime minister Marcel Ciolacu, accompanied by Defence minister Angel Tilvar, deputy prime minister Marian Neacsu, Foreign Affairs minister Luminita Odobescu, Labour minister Simona Bucura-Oprescu, and MEP Victor Negrescu, vice-president of the European Parliament, as honorary advisor to the Prime Minister visited the 29th edition of EURONAVAL 2024, organized by SOGENA (Naval Events Organisation and Management Company), a subsidiary of GICAN.  (Photo: www.gov.ro)
