Foreign direct investment up 3.69pct, to EUR 5,362 million, in first nine months

Non-residents' direct investments in Romania in the first nine months of 2024 totalled EUR 5,362 million, up 3.69% from the EUR 5,171 million in the similar period one year before, the National Bank of Romania (BNR) informs in a press release sent on Wednesday."Non-residents' direct investments in Romania totalled EUR 5,362 million (compared with EUR 5,171 million in January - September 2023), of which equity (including the estimated reinvestment of earnings) and intercompany lending recorded net values of EUR 4,288 million and EUR 1,074 million, respectively," the release reads.A total of 4,392 companies running on foreign capital were established in Romania in the first nine months of 2024, marking a 16.22% decrease compared to the same period in 2023, according to data compiled by the National Trade Registry Office (ONRC).These 4,392 new companies had a total subscribed share capital of 16.902 million dollars, down by 85.44% compared to the subscribed capital of firms registered in the first nine months of 2023, which amounted to 116.079 million dollars.In September 2024, 428 companies with foreign participation were registered (-29.26% compared to the same month in 2023), with a subscribed capital of 161,200 dollars (-98.08%). In terms of business sectors, the largest number of registrations were in wholesale and retail trade, and auto and motorcycle repair (37.85% of the total), professional, administrative, scientific, and technical activities (17.29% of the total), and transport, storage, and communications (16.12%).At the end of September 2024, there were 269,386 companies with foreign participation in the social capital in Romania. The value of the subscribed capital was over 71.526 billion dollars.The highest number of foreign capital companies was from Italy, with 53,411 companies (subscribed capital of 3.644 billion dollars), but the largest share capital belonged to Dutch companies, with 13.114 billion dollars in 6,186 firms.
