Number of companies suspending activity, up almost 20pct in first nine months

The number of companies that suspended their activity in the first nine months of 2024 was 13,481, an increase of 19.29% compared to the same period last year, according to data published by the National Trade Registry Office (ONRC).The highest number of companies that suspended their activity was in Bucharest, with 1,619 (an increase of 20.64% compared to January-September 2023), followed by the counties of Cluj, with 837 suspended companies (up 10.13%), Iasi - 603 (up 26.68%), Bihor - 588 (up 34.55%) and Brasov - 578 (up 10.73%).On the other hand, the fewest suspensions were recorded in the counties of Ialomita - 82 (up 7.89% compared to the first nine months of 2023), Covasna - 96 (up 20%), Gorj - 98 (up 4.26%), Giurgiu - 107 (up 52.86%) and Teleorman - 107 (up 1.9%).The largest increases in the number of suspensions were recorded in the counties of Dambovita (up 77.72%), Tulcea (up 58.11%) and Giurgiu (up 52.86%), while decreases occurred only in the counties of Caras-Severin (down 5.69%), Calarasi (down 3.33%), Vaslui (down 1.62%) and Satu Mare (down 0.51%).By sector, the highest number of suspensions occurred in wholesale and retail trade, repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles, with 3,134 (up 4.5%), followed by professional, scientific, and technical activities - 1,238 suspensions (up 12.75%), and construction - 1,210 suspensions (up 41.19%).In September 2024, 1,134 suspensions were recorded, the highest numbers being in Bucharest (115), Constanta (112), Iasi (57), Cluj (48) and Sibiu (45).
