CSAT meeting called for Thursday, analysis of risks from cyber threat actors on the agenda

December 23, 2024

President Klaus Iohannis called a meeting of the Supreme Council for National Defense (CSAT) for Thursday, starting at 14:00 p.m., at the Cotroceni Palace, the Presidential Administration informs. The agenda of the meeting includes the analysis of potential risks to national security generated by the actions of state and non-state cyber actors on IT&C infrastructures supporting the electoral process. The National Cyber Security Directorate announced on Wednesday that last year, at the request of the Cyber Security Operational Council (COSC), it has officially recommended that public institutions ban the TikTok app due to the significant cybersecurity and data manipulation risks it entails, especially amid fears of the public opinion and decision-making processes being manipulated via social networks. The National Cyber Security Directorate also said that monitoring social media accounts and investigating tactics and techniques for spreading posts on social networks through algorithm manipulation do not fall under its competence.National Cyber Security Directorate representatives noted that throughout the election period, the institution has actively cooperated with the expert national authorities - the Permanent Electoral Authority, the Special Telecommunications Service and the National Communications Administration and Regulation Authority - in order to prevent cyberattacks on the electoral infrastructure and to ensure a transparent and secure electoral process. The first round of the presidential election held on Sunday ended with independent Calin Georgescu in the lead, with 2,120,401 valid votes, (22.94%), followed by USR's Elena Lasconi with 1,772,500 valid votes (19.18%). The presidential runoff will take place on December 8.
