PresidentialElection2024/Ambassador Muraru denies rumors about U.S. official backing for Calin Georgescu's presidential bid

December 23, 2024

Romanian ambassador in Washington Andrei Muraru announced on Monday that "there is no official support from the American side" for presidential contender Calin Georgescu and that the team of the Republican President-elect of the United States Donald Trump "denied that any American official of the future administration would be traveling to Romania in the coming period to participate in events alongside candidate Georgescu", emphasizing that "the information is false"."Regarding media speculations about an alleged American support for presidential candidate Calin Georgescu, I can tell you that, as far as American authorities, American politicians from both the Republican and Democratic parties, or political or civic figures with democratic orientations and an important voice in the American public space are concerned, such support does not exist," Muraru said in a statement."There are several explanations for this: first, it is a well-established principle in American politics to reject and refuse any action or opinion that can be interpreted as election interference. In either American elections or in elections in other countries. There are laws in the United States that prohibit exactly such behavior (the most important is called the "Hatch Act" and prohibits federal officials from speaking on domestic or foreign political campaign topics)," added the Romanian ambassador."Secondly", Muraru went on to note, "no one from the current Democratic administration team, the future Republican administration, or from Congress, would associate themselves with the kind of political vision that candidate Georgescu represents and expresses"."American politicians and officials are very attentive to anti-Semitic and Holocaust denial messages, to the glorification of fascist war criminals from the past, as well as to positions that deny the role of the U.S. in ensuring Romania's security and that call for alignment with Moscow's interests. At the same time, they are very sensitive to the perception of the domestic public and from partner and friendly countries, which would certainly feel hurt by a possible attempt at meddling or interfering in their own elections," he stressed, according to the statement."In recent days, I have spoken about the developments in Romania with many congressmen, Republicans and Democrats, as well as with other American officials. They were surprised and concerned by the rise of this quasi-unknown candidate and by the way this mobilization that is difficult to explain in terms of a transparent and regulated campaign was achieved. American officials have taken note of the conclusions of the Supreme Council for National Defense set forth in the public statement of November 28 this year and continue to follow these developments in Romania with great concern," Muraru continued."In short - there is no official American backing for candidate Georgescu. President Trump's team has denied that any American official from the future administration would be traveling to Romania in the coming period to participate in events alongside Georgescu. The information is false," concluded the Romanian ambassador in Washington.
