The Constitutional Court of Romania (CCR) rejected on Monday the request of Cristian Terhes, candidate in the presidential elections, to cancel the results of the first round of voting, with the second round to take place on December 8."Under the constitutionality review on the observance of the procedure for the election of the President of Romania, giving effectiveness to the powers enshrined in the Romanian Constitution, including to the respect of the popular vote expressed in the first round of the presidential election of 2024, the constitutional judges decided, by unanimous vote, to reject as unfounded the appeal of the candidate Terhes Cristian. At the same time, the Court unanimously decided: 1) to confirm and validate the results of the elections for the office of President of Romania in the first round of elections on November 24, 2024; 2) to hold the second round of elections for the office of President of Romania on Sunday, December 8, 2024, with the participation of Mr. Calin Georgescu and Mrs. Elena Valerica Lasconi," announced Monday evening the President of the Constitutional Court, Marian Enache. The CCR president pointed out that Terhes did not contest the ballots cast by voters in the diaspora, so it was deemed that there is no need for them to be recounted."The Court noted that, according to the petition of the contestant, votes in the diaspora were not challenged and, as such, under the given conditions, it considered that their recount was no longer required. In the Court's assessment, even if some differences in votes between candidates were found, but to the extent that these differences do not result from frauds likely to alter the outcome of the elections, they are considered only possible material errors in the counting of the votes cast, with no relevance in establishing the result of the reconfiguration of the candidates' ranking, according to the result we received from the Central Electoral Bureau, which was not conducive to our finding any fraud in the voting for the presidential election," Enache explained. The electoral campaign starts from the moment the CCR decision is published in the Official Journal.
