Infrastructure: Wizz Air extends Craiova base with additional airplane and new flights

January 15, 2025

Wizz Air company extends its Craiova base by re-allocating the second airplane , Airbus A320neo with two new routes in Romania and higher frequencies on five other routes, Craiova Airport representatives informed on Wednesday.   According to the mentioned source, the base will operate 10 routes to five countries, by means of the new airplane, starting June 2025, passengers will be able to fly on 5 routes from Craiova to Memmingen and Bari, Madrid and Dortmund, tickets being already for sale.   Sorin Manda, the general manager of Craiova International Airport declared that the return of the second Wizz Air airplane to Craiova airport represents “a natural stage of the airport development.”   “Operations at Craiova International Airport suffered from the aviation crisis triggered by the withdrawal of Airbus airplanes for service, which led to the withdrawal of one of the two plane allocated to Wizzair Craiova, but in the meantime we collaborated with representatives of the air company so that the return of the plane could be a priority. I am glad to announce that we will travel to new destinations in Germany and Italy, from Cariova International Airport, the suspended flights to Spain and Germany will resume and flights to new destinations will intensify. Good news is that we expect the area of attracting passengers for Cariova Airport to grow, as Craiova-Pitesti expressway was completed and Romania was accepted in the Schengen land area, thus allowing passengers from northern Bulgaria to reach our airport more rapidly than the one in Sofia,” Sorin Manda said.   According to him, the increase of operations at Craiova International Airport coincides with the completion of expansion works. “In conclusion, as of this summer we will fly from the new terminal, with a last generation aircraft to ten European destinations but we will also have holiday flights to Europe and Asia,”Mandea added.   According to the Craiova Airport press release, since the beginning of its operations in Romania in 2006, Wizz Air has constantly increased its investments, considering it an essential market. At present, the air company operates 165 low cost routes on 12 airports in Romania, connecting passengers to 74 destinations in 24 countries.   In the last 18 years, Wizz Air established six operational bases in Bucharest, Cluj-Napoca, Iasi, Timisoara, Craiova and Sibiu. The air company has over 1,400 employees in Romania and indirectly supports over 9,200 local jobs in connex industries.   (Photo:https://www.facebook.com/wizzair/photos/)
