American senators condemn Russia's interference in Romania's presidential elections

January 16, 2025

Four American senators, republicans and democrats, condemn Russia's interference in Romanian presidential elections and express their support for this country in the fight for the integrity of the election process.   Vladimir Putin's attack on Romanian elections is another example of the hybrid war against European allies and partners, declared senators Pete Ricketts, Ben Cardin, Jim Risch and Jeanne Shaheen, in a public statement released on the US Senate website.   They showed they backed Romania, a strong NATO ally in the fight for the integrity of its elections. They condemned Putin's manipulation on TikTok, controlled by the Chineses People's Party, to undermine the democratic process in Romania. The world should be aware of the serious threat against democracy represented by Russia's manipulation on TikTok to undermine free societies, the four American politicians warned.   The Romanian government revealed that attack on its democracy and the decision to declasify information about the investigation carried out and inform the United States and the international community are appreciated. The US back Romania, for the urgent measures adopted to organize free and correct presidential elections, the senators concluded.   Ben Cardin (Democrat) is the chairman of the Senate Commission for foreign affairs, where Republican Jim Risch is a member.   In their turn, Democratic senator Jeanne Shaheen is chairperson of the Senate Subcommission for foreign relations with Europe and cooperation in the field of regional security, which her Republican colleague Pete Ricketts is a member of that subcommission.
