Romania sets date for new presidential elections on March 23 and April 6, 2025

January 5, 2025

Romania will hold repeat presidential elections on March 23 and April 6, 2025. The previous results were canceled due to large-scale cyberattacks and suspicions of external interference.   The ruling coalition of Romania has established the dates for the repeat presidential elections following the Constitutional Court's decision to annul the results of the previous vote.   The pro-European coalition, consisting of the Social Democratic Party led by Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu, the National Liberal Party, and the ethnic Hungarian UDMR party, has already declared support for a single candidate - Crin Antonescu.   Reportedly, the second round of the presidential election will be held on April 6.  The pro-European PSD-PNL-UDMR coalition has already publicly announced its support for the former acting president of Romania , Crin Antonescu, as its joint candidate.  Other candidates include Elena Lasconi (USR), Nicusor Dan (independent), Calin Georgescu (independent) and Daniel Funeriu (independent).    The 2025 presidential election in the country will be held again after the Constitutional Court of Romania decided to annul the results of the first round of elections held in late November.   The court's decision was a response to declassified data pointing to “hybrid attacks” during the election process. In this context, Romania's Supreme Security Council confirmed that the country faced numerous cyberattacks and interference with election platforms. In particular, 85 thousand cyberattacks were aimed at exploiting vulnerabilities in the voting system.     At the center of the scandal is far-right candidate Calin Georgescuwho won the first round of the election, although polls before the vote predicted that he would have a much lower chance. Georgescu made extensive use of TikTok during the election campaign, which garnered him significant support on social media, but now there are suspicions of illegal campaign financing and external interference.
