German ambassador: Élysée Treaty, foundation of close Franco-German friendship and symbol of reconciliation

February 20, 2025

The Élysée Treaty is the foundation of the close Franco-German friendship and the symbol of reconciliation between Germany and France after World War II, said the German ambassador in Bucharest, Peer Gebauer. The message is sent by the German diplomatic mission in the context in which Germany and France celebrate 62 years since the signing of the Treaty between the Federal Republic of Germany and the French Republic of 22 January 1963 on Franco-German Cooperation and six years since the signing of the Treaty of Aachen."Our friendship is the basis for the development of the European Union. With the Treaty of Aachen, signed in 2019, Germany and France renewed their commitment to a strong and sovereign European future. In the face of today's challenges, this commitment is more important than ever. By closely cooperating in European politics, we contribute to the strengthening of the European Union and to the responsibility for a united and peaceful continent. I am delighted that this year, as well, I can celebrate this day in Bucharest together with my French counterpart. Now, more than ever, we need friends and reliable partners, and Germany, France and Romania are exactly that for each other," Gebauer said, according to a press release. In his turn, French Ambassador Nicolas Warnery emphasized that the Élysée Treaty, 62 years ago, "enshrined a historic reconciliation between France and Germany, laying the foundations for a lasting friendship"."This heritage has been reinforced by the Treaty of Aachen, which reaffirms the common commitment to a strong and united Europe. In a world facing great geopolitical, climate, economic and social challenges, unity and cooperation remain essential. Today we are celebrating the Franco-German friendship, which is strengthened daily through exchanges and joint projects. We continue to maintain the European project with the support of Romania, a valuable partner in our European family. Together, we are working for a united and resilient Europe," adds the diplomat. The anniversary began on Tuesday at the Elvire Popesco cinema of the Institut Français, where the two ambassadors attended the screening of the film "Le Carrosse d'Or" directed by Jean Renoir, an event that brings the Marseille International Film Festival (FIDMarseille) for the first time to Bucharest. On Wednesday, the ambassadors will discuss the current importance of the Franco-German friendship with the students of the French High School Anna de Noailles, of the Ecole francaise internationale de Bucarest (EFIB), of the German international schools Deutsche Schule Bukarest and Hermann Oberth. On Thursday, the two ambassadors will have an exchange of views with representatives of the Romanian Government on current foreign and European policy issues. Also on Thursday, they will take part, alongside the Rector of the University of Bucharest, Marian Preda, in a discussion with students from the University of Bucharest, the National University of Political Studies and Public Administration (SNSPA) and the Franco-Romanian Law College (CJFREE).The central theme will be the importance of the Franco-German friendship for European integration, the current challenges of the European Union in the regional geopolitical context, and the role of ambassadors in these times.  (Photo:https://www.facebook.com/)
