World Vision: Four out of ten middle school children do not wish to go to high school, but work

February 25, 2025

Four out of ten middle school children (41%) do not wish to go to high school, but prefer to get a job, work in the family business, or attend a qualification course, while about half of high school students spend more than an hour commuting to and from school, according to the World Vision Romania report "The Well-being of Children in Rural Areas," 2024.According to a World Vision press release on Thursday, the same study shows that two out of ten children (19%) in rural areas are never helped with their homework because they live in families where most adults have completed a maximum of eight years of schooling. Furthermore, 49% of parents report being dissatisfied with their children's academic progress over the past year.A total of 86 students from rural areas will be supported by the foundation, together with a European retail chain, to continue their education this year through the "Education for Well-being" project, part of the "I Want to Go to 9th Grade" programme. The main goal of the "Education for Well-being" project is to reduce the inequality of opportunities for students from disadvantaged communities, in order to continue their studies and reach their maximum potential for personal and professional development. In the 2023-2024 school year, 110 students from rural areas were supported to continue their studies and attend high school, while another 40 students entered specialisation internships within the "I Want to Go to 9th Grade" programme. The "Education for Well-being" project expands on the concept of previous projects implemented with the financial support of PEPCO. In addition to non-formal activities, individual sessions, workshops, and focus groups will be added to provide counseling on mental health and well-being, personal and sustainable development, alongside students' parents and teachers. Four summer schools will also be organised.  (Photo:https://worldvision.ro/blog-media/media/)
