Unilever closes Bulgaria factory, relocates to Romania

March 3, 2025

The multinational Unilever has decided to close the Denny ice cream factory in Veliko Tarnovo, Economica website reports.   According to the cited source, production is to move to Romania, where Unilever has a factory in Ploiesti and one in Suceava (following the acquisition of Betty Ice). At the same time, the administrative part remains in Bulgaria. The ice cream factory in Veliko Tarnovo will cease operations on April 30, 2025. The company did not provide specific reasons. Sources however revealed the main reason is the lack of workforce.   “The production will move to the factory in Romania, while the commercial and administrative part will remain in Bulgaria to ensure intra-community trade with ice cream from Romania to Bulgaria. The reason for the relocation is the lack of labor force,” the sources said.   The decision to move production from Bulgaria to another market is not the first within the Unilever group. For example, in 2007, the group stopped producing Kaliakra brand oil in Bulgaria and now imports it from its factory in Romania. According to unofficial sources, the company, like many others in the country, is having difficulty finding qualified workers.
