National Defense Minister Angel Tilvar participated on Thursday in the meeting of NATO defense ministers organized at the organization's headquarters in Brussels, the Defense Ministry said in a release, noting that the meeting represents an important moment in setting the stage for the NATO Summit in The Hague, scheduled for June 24-25, being the first event in this format with the representatives of the new U.S. administration.The first session was dedicated to debates on measures to continue strengthening the allied deterrence and defense posture, as well as the support package for Ukraine, according to the decisions adopted at the latest NATO summit held last year in Washington. Other important topics focused on the need for resources to ensure the long-term transformation of the Alliance while fairly sharing risks and responsibilities, and the development of the capabilities necessary to ensure a credible and effective deterrence and defense posture."Solidarity, unity and the fair sharing of risks and responsibilities within the Alliance represent the foundation for the functioning thereof. Romania is prepared to assume its share of the commitment regarding the development of capabilities, while continuing to contribute to NATO missions and operations. Thus, Romania will continue to be a reliable ally through its contribution to the allied efforts to strengthen the deterrence and defense posture," Minister Tilvar declared, as cited in the release.The strategic importance of the Black Sea Region for European and Euro-Atlantic security was reiterated, particularly in the current security context.The second session of the meeting took place in the format of the NATO-Ukraine Council, with the participation of the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas.The allies sent an important political signal regarding allied unity and solidarity in providing support to Ukraine and welcomed its efforts to carry on with the necessary defense reforms.The presence of the EU High Representative highlighted the cooperation between the two international organizations to streamline efforts to support Ukraine's fight against Russia's war of aggression launched in February 2022, the National Defense Ministry mentions.In his address, the Romanian defense minister emphasized the multidimensional support Romania has offered Ukraine and the importance of continuing NATO and EU efforts in this regard.
