Russian Embassy in Bucharest assures Romania not targeted by Russian attacks whatsoever

March 13, 2025

The Russian Federation does not look to attack Romania whatsoever - the Russian Embassy in Bucharest assured in response to the Russian chargé d'affaires being summoned to the Romanian Foreign Ministry in the wake of the drone attack that took place on Thursday at the eastern Romanian-Ukrainian border. The Russian Embassy in Bucharest said that the clarifications come in the context of the summoning of Russia's chargé d'affaires a.i. to the Foreign Ministry over the violation of Romania's airspace by Russian unmanned vehicles and other accusations of attacks on civilian targets in Ukraine.''The Russian Federation does not target Romania for any attack whatsoever. The targets the Russian Armed Forces zeroes in on the territory of Ukraine are exclusively military sites and infrastructure used by the Ukrainian Armed Forces and the Ukrainian military-industrial complex. There are no attacks directed at civilian infrastructure. In absence of convincing evidence that the drones that reportedly crashed on Romanian soil are Russian-owned, it cannot be ruled out that the February 13 incidents could have been a provocation by the Ukrainian side against the backdrop of the ongoing peace negotiations to resolve the conflict in Ukraine," the Russian Embassy in Bucharest wrote on Facebook. The chargé d'affaires a.i. of the Russian Federation in Bucharest was urgently summoned on Thursday to the headquarters of the Foreign Ministry following the drone attack at the Romanian-Ukrainian border, and was informed of the ''firm condemnation of the repeated infringement of Romania's airspace by unmanned vehicles of the Russian military forces'', ''which represents a blatant violation of international law by a permanent member of the UN Security Council.''The Romanian Foreign Ministry stressed that these illegal and irresponsible attacks must stop, and that Romania reserves itself the right to take the necessary response measures.****    A new series of attacks with unmanned aerial vehicles took place during the night from Sunday to Monday, targeting civilian and port infrastructure objectives in Ukraine, near the river border with Romania, in the area of the town of Reni. RO-ALERT messages were issued for the population in Tulcea and Galati counties, the Ministry of National Defence announced.According to the Ministry of National Defence (MApN), the radar systems of the Ministry did not indicate, at any moment, any unauthorised intrusions of the monitored targets into the national airspace. On the night of Sunday, February 16, to Monday, February 17, Russian Federation forces carried out a new series of attacks with unmanned aerial vehicles against civilian and port infrastructure targets in Ukraine, near the river border with Romania, in the area of the town of Reni, according to a ministry press release."The monitoring and radar surveillance systems of the Ministry of National Defence detected and monitored aerial targets operating in Ukrainian airspace, near the Tulcea and Galati counties. Consequently, the National Military Command Centre (core) notified the General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations regarding the implementation of measures to alert the population in the border area of the two counties, and RO-ALERT messages were sent at 10:40 PM. The cease of the air alert in the targeted areas was transmitted at 12:05 AM," the quoted source says. The MApN forces will carry out, on Monday, according to standard procedures, investigations in areas where risks may arise due to these situations and will continue airspace surveillance missions. Additionally, allied structures are being informed in real-time about the situations resulting from the attacks."The Ministry of National Defence remains firm in its actions to condemn these attacks carried out by the Russian Federation against Ukrainian civilian infrastructure targets and elements, which are unjustified and in serious contradiction with international law," MApN also points out.
