Bolojan, in London: Security guarantees are not just for Ukraine, but for entire Eastern Flank

April 1, 2025

Interim President Ilie Bolojan says that the security guarantees to be granted to Ukraine will in fact be for "the entire Eastern Flank, from the Baltic Sea to the Black Sea", pointing out that they cannot be provided without the support of the United States. He said, on Sunday, at the end of European leaders' summit in London, that the meeting was a coordination meeting with a view to organizing the European Council on March 6 and a meeting on March 7 with the leaders of countries that are not part of the European Union but "want an approach to the solution to the war in Ukraine that will bring a secure peace"."It has been agreed that the security guarantees that can be granted to Ukraine cannot be provided without US support. These security guarantees are not just for Ukraine, but practically for the entire Eastern Flank, from the Baltic to the Black Sea. In this sense, in the continuation of the transatlantic partnership, a common plan will be worked on in such a way that security guarantees will be ensured both with a high involvement of European countries, but also relying on a support that the US could providem" said Bolojan in a press statement.According to the Romanian interim president, the European leaders agreed to maintain financial and military support for Ukraine. They also agreed to prepare the European countries so that they "take on a greater share for peace in Europe", "In this regard, we will consider increasing defence budgets in the coming period", Ilie Bolojan further said.At the same time, the interim president added, for a truce and ceasefire to be concluded as soon as possible, a resumption of talks between Ukraine and the US would contribute to a quicker closure of the conflict and ceasefire."The countries present have agreed to hold consultations in the next stage and by the end of next week to adopt decisions in this regard," lie Bolojan concluded.
