April 2, 2025

Strengthening NATO's deterrence and defence posture on the eastern flank, in a robust and coherent manner, remains a major priority for us, including ahead of the NATO Summit in The Hague, Romania's Defence Minister Angel Tilvar said on Monday at the reception of the German ambassador to Romania, Peer Gebauer."Strengthening the transatlantic relationship, unity and allied solidarity are essential moving forward," Tilvar is quoted as saying in a press statement released by the Romanian Defence Ministry (MApN).During the meeting, the two officials had an in-depth dialogue on essential issues regarding regional and Euro-Atlantic security. At the same time, they welcomed the celebration, on February 20, of 145 years of diplomatic ties between Romania and Germany, highlighting the significant progress made in the bilateral partnership, including in the field of defence. Discussions focused on the security situation, as well as on the state of cooperation between the two countries, including the ongoing acquisition programmes. The importance of strengthening the preparedness of the European Union member states to support defence efforts was also underlined, highlighting the need for increased assumption of responsibilities for their own security. The two officials underlined the importance of adequate funding for the defence sector, through the passage of new instruments available to the European Union states.Tilvar highlighted the solid relationship with Germany within the European initiatives in the field of defence, emphasising the importance of implementing the project financed by the European Commission's programme for the construction of a gunpowder factory in Romania. The subject was also addressed in recent discussions with officials of the German company Rheinmetall on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference.Another key point of the meeting was cooperation inside NATO, in particular strengthening the deterrence and defence posture on the eastern flank of the alliance, with emphasis on the Black Sea region. The officials also discussed the support provided to Ukraine as part of international efforts to resolve the conflict, strongly condemning the aggression of the Russian Federation. In addition, they mentioned the need to continue supporting Moldova on its European path. (Photo:https://armed.mapn.ro/)
