Eurowind to Build Europe’s Largest Wind Farm in Romania

April 3, 2025

Danish developer Eurowind has submitted an application to Transelectrica for the connection of a huge wind farm to be built in Botosani County. With a capacity of almost 1,200 MW, it would be the largest onshore wind farm in Europe at this time. The project is at an early stage.   The Botosani Wind Power Plant (WPP) project will actually be a complex of nine parks located in nine communes in northern Botosani county, according to a local press report. We also learn from there that the Danish project company, EWE Eolian, has submitted a connection application to Transelectrica, for a power of 1,188 MW. According to the source above, the Danish developer has submitted a connection request to Transelectrica, from where a solution study is expected, after which the Technical Connection Approval (ATR) is expected to be issued. The land has been secured by the Danish investor, and our sources say that the local authorities have received the investors very well, given the potential of this investment.    The project is still at an early stage, and it is likely that the park, which would be completed in stages, will not be operational before 2031.    Most likely, depending on the solution that will be approved by Transelectrica – possibly the investor will also support a network reinforcement in the area – the park would be connected to the Suceava station, which would be expanded, and part of the energy discharged into the network could also reach the Republic of Moldova, through the future Suceava-Balti line, a project that is currently being worked on.   The advantage is that this project, even if it will not benefit from the same excellent wind conditions as in Dobrogea, is being developed in an area that is not congested, unlike what is happening now in the southeastern area of Romania. At this point, this capacity will become the largest onshore wind farm in Europe, according to local media, over Fosen Vind in Norway, completed in 2020, which has a capacity of 1,057 MW and is owned by Statkraft.
