Trade: Over 19% decrease in retail turnover in January 2025, compared to end of 2024

 The volume of turnover in retail trade (except for trade in motor vehicles and motorcycles) decreased in the first month of the current year compared to December 2024, as a gross series, by 19.4%, and as a series adjusted for the number of working days and seasonality it increased by 0.1%, according to data from the National Institute of Statistics (INS) released to the public on Thursday.The decline in the volume of turnover in retail trade (except for trade in motor vehicles and motorcycles), gross series, in January 2025, compared to the previous month, was determined by the decreases recorded in sales of food, beverages and tobacco (-21.3%), sales of non-food products (-20.5%) and in the retail trade of automotive fuels in specialized stores (-12%).On the other hand, the increase in turnover, as a series adjusted for the number of working days and seasonality, was due to the increases recorded in the retail trade of automotive fuels in specialized stores (+0.5%) and in the sales of food, beverages and tobacco (+0.2%). Sales of non-food products decreased by 0.7%.In January 2025, compared to January 2024, the volume of turnover in retail trade (except for trade in motor vehicles and motorcycles), gross series, registered an overall increase of 4.1%, due to the increase recorded in the retail trade of motor vehicle fuels in specialized stores (+7.3%) and in the sales of non-food products (+7%). Sales of food products, beverages and tobacco decreased by 0.9%.In the series adjusted for the number of working days and seasonality, the volume of turnover in retail trade increased, overall, by 3.2%, due to increases in sales of non-food products (+5.8%) and in retail trade of automotive fuels in specialized stores (+1.2%). Sales of food products, beverages and tobacco decreased by 0.2%.
