DefMin: Stability of Western Balkans region remains a strategic priority for Romania

 The stability of the Western Balkans region remains a strategic priority for Romania, which is substantially engaged in operations in this region, Defense Minister Angel Tilvar declared on Monday at a meeting with Croatian ambassador in Bucharest Marija Kapitanovic."The security of the area is closely linked to that of the Black Sea region," the Romanian minister emphasized, as cited in a Defense Ministry release.The talks also reviewed relevant aspects of the Black Sea region's security situation, against the background of the Russian Federation's war of aggression in Ukraine.The defense minister emphasized the importance Romania attaches to the Western Balkans region, highlighting the fact that Romania is holding this year the command of the EUFOR Althea mission in Bosnia-Herzegovina - a major commitment to the EU's Common Security and Defense Policy. Apart from being the top contributor of troops, Romania also participates in EUFOR Althea missions with a helicopter detachment of its National Air Force, Angel Tilvar said, mentioning also the presence of Romanian troops in the NATO Kosovo Force - an essential mission in maintaining a safe and stable security environment.The two officials also discussed cooperation within regional initiatives such as the South-Eastern Europe Defense Ministerial (SEDM) Process, whose presidency is held by Romania over 2023 – 2025.
