Nokian Tyres facility rolls out new all-season tire range with up to 38 pct renewables

April 10, 2025

Finnish producer Nokian Tyres is launching a new range of all-season tyres for the Central European market, which contains up to 38% of renewable, recycled and ISCC PLUS certified materials, more than before, this being the company's first tire in commercial production with such a high share of renewable and recycled materials. Deliveries are set to begin this spring, the company said in a release on Wednesday. The all-season Nokian Tyres Seasonproof 2 provides top-tier safety on snow and slush as well as exceptional performance and a smooth driving experience in summer."The tire range contains up to 38% of renewable, recycled and ISCC PLUS certified materials of which 2% are ISCC PLUS mass balanced approach certified from bio-based, bio-circular and/or circular feedstock. The launch is an important step for the company in reaching its non-financial target to increase the share of renewable and recycled raw materials in its products to 50% by the year 2030," the release says. The new Nokian Tyres Seasonproof 2 is an all-season tire developed to meet the needs of Central and South European drivers. The product range offers sizes for modern passenger cars, SUVs and CUVs available for consumers by autumn 2025. All-season tires are designed to work safe in all four seasons in Central European conditions, and the Nokian Tyres Seasonproof 2 comes with the Snowflake symbol (3PMSF), which indicates that the tire has been officially approved for winter use."Central Europe is an important strategic growth area for Nokian Tyres. Nokian Tyres Seasonproof 2 is produced in our zero CO2 emission tire factory in Oradea, Romania close to the Central European consumers and customers. Furthermore, launching a tire range using up to 38% renewable, recycled and ISCC PLUS certified materials takes us significantly closer to our goal of using 50% renewable and recycled materials in our tires by 2030," says Tommi Alhola, Senior Vice President of Passenger Car Tyres, Central Europe for Nokian Tyres. The Nokian Tyres Seasonproof 2 is the company's first tire in commercial production with such a high share of renewable and recycled materials. For example, the resin and silica used in the tire are from renewable resources. Recycled materials include carbon black and steel. The materials are found in all sizes within the product family available for consumers and also enhance the tire's driving properties."By incorporating renewable materials, we have been able to boost the tire's performance while also lowering the rolling resistance. We are committed to finding renewable or recycled options for traditional fossil-based materials, and together with various partners keep researching for new innovative options," says Teemu Soini, Vice President of Innovation and Development, as cited in the release.Nokian Tyres' Romania factory in Oradea, where the tires are produced, has also received the International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) PLUS, making the use of the certified materials possible in Seasonproof 2. ISCC is a globally applicable sustainability certification system."The ability to introduce a tire with up to 38% of renewable, recycled and ISCC PLUS certified materials to the market is the result of long-term development work. Earlier, we have for example launched the Nokian Tyres Green Step concept tire made from 93% recycled and renewable materials and demonstrated the usability of a groundbreaking new renewable material in tires by presenting the Nokian Tyres Green Step Ligna concept tire," Soini added, according to the release. The Nokian Tyres Seasonproof 2 is the first tire available for consumers commercially produced in the new Nokian Tyres factory in Oradea, Romania, the world's first full-scale tire factory with zero CO2 emissions, which was inaugurated in September 2024. Tire deliveries will start in spring 2025, the release also states.
