Natural population growth continues to be negative in January, according to statistics

 The number of births and deaths recorded in January 2025 decreased compared to the same period the previous year, and the natural growth remained negative, at minus 10,845 people, according to data published on Friday by the National Institute of Statistics (INS).According to the official statistics, in January 2025, birth certificates were registered for 12,755 children, an increase of 818 (+6.9%) compared to December 2024.The number of death certificates registered in January was 23,600, of which 12,140 for men and 11,460 for women, an increase of 2,046 deaths compared to December 2024, which represents an increase of 9.5% (+7.2% males and +12.0% females).The number of death certificates registered for children under one year of age in January 2025 was 84, down by one from December 2024.The natural growth remained negative (-10,845) in January 2025, with the number of registered deaths being 1.9 times higher than that of live births.In January 2025, 41.4% (9,769 deaths) of the total number of deaths were registered in people aged 80 and over, 26.5% (6,244 deaths) in people aged 70-79 and 17.2%, representing 4,049 deaths, in people aged 60-69. At the opposite end, the fewest deaths were recorded in the age groups 0-4 years (105 deaths), 5-19 years (58 deaths) and 20-29 years (77 deaths).The number of divorces pronounced by final court decisions and by the consent of the spouses (administratively or by notarial procedure) was 519 in January 2025.The number of birth certificates for live births registered in January 2025 was 988 (-7.2%) lower compared to the same month in 2024.The number of death certificates registered in January 2025 decreased by 1,127 (-4.6%) compared to January 2024, and the number for children under one year of age who died was lower by in January 2025 compared to the same month in 2024.The natural growth was negative, both in January 2025 (-10,845 persons) and in January 2024 (10,984 persons).In January 2025, 11,437 people died in the urban areas (5,792 men and 5,645 women), and 12,163 people died in rural areas (6,348 men and 5,815 women). Compared to the same month in 2024, the number of deaths recorded decreased by 6.7% in urban areas (-7.6% for men and -5.8% for women) and by 2.4% in rural areas (-4.1% for men and -0.5% for women).
