Names of three Romanian MEPs named in Huawei investigation - Gate in the European Parliament

April 16, 2025

The name of former MEPs Cristian Busoi and Tudor Ciuhodaru, as well as of the present MEP Daniel Buda are mentioned in the investigation of several Belgian publications about the scandal connected to lobby Huawei in the European Parliament, after the three signed in 2021 a letter of support for the Chinese company through they required the EU executive to modify the restrictive legislation which made access for the firm to 5G networks in the EU difficult, shows the Follow the Money site. The letter signed by eight MEPs in 2021, was a reaction to another, signed by 41 MEPs which required the exclusion of Huawei and its competitor ZTE from the 5G networks in Europe. The latter letter, known in Brussels as the 'Nokia' letter after the name of a European competitor of Huawei, was dated October 2020 and also urged a ban on EU funding for the use of technology from high-risk Chinese companies. Among the signatories were well-known MEPs such as former European Commissioner Andrus Ansip, German Green politician Sven Giegold and former Lithuanian Prime Minister Andrius Kubilius, who is now EU defence commissioner.   But a small group of eight MEPs took the opposite position, writes Follow the Money. The eight signed a counter-letter warning of 'technological racism', arguing that excluding companies on the basis of where they come from is discriminatory.Among the signatories is Cristian-Silviu Busoi, who at the time was chairman of the EP's powerful Industry, Research and Energy (ITRE) Committee, writes Follow the Money. Also, in what appears to be a change of heart, Giuseppe Ferrandino, an Italian MEP who signed the 'Nokia' letter, has also signed the second letter. Among the co-signatories of the letter, posted by the Belgian portal on its website, are Tudor Ciuhodaru, then an MEP in the S&D group, and PNL MEP Daniel Buda, who is also a member of the current EP. In total, the letter is signed by six MEPs from the EPP group and two from the S&D group, five Italians and three Romanians. In a reaction posted on Thursday on his Facebook page, Busoi denied having been among the signatories of the letter favourable to Huawei.'For the correct information of the public, in relation to information that has emerged about a letter sent in 2021 to the European Commission, I make the following clarification: from checking the official email at the European Parliament and with my former assistants, I have not found any correspondence with Mr Fulvio Matrusciello, who seems to be the initiator of the lobbying letter to Huawei, or with anyone else on the subject of this letter. I certainly did NOT sign this letter either electronically or holographically, and I do not recall my former colleague, Mr Matrusciello MEP, asking me for verbal agreement to this letter. My position in all official and unofficial discussions has been to support Romania's position in having 3, 4 and 5G technology without security breaches,' Busoi posted on social media. The investigation of the Belgian justice for  Huawei lobby in the European Parliament is just starting. The European Parliament sealed the offices of  two parliamentary assistants in the headquarters of the Brussels institution at the request of a Belgian judge.
