Romania will not send any military personnel to Ukraine

April 24, 2025

Romania will not send any military personnel to Ukraine, but Romania could be a transport hub for the designated forces, in the event of a peace plan in the neighboring country, declared on Thursday interim president Ilie Bolojan, who was in Paris. He participated in the meeting of heads of state and government of the "Coalition of the Willing" on security in Ukraine. The interim president said that Romania must be prepared, in this regard, "with the logistical side".He addressed the situation of possible peace agreements between Ukraine and Russia and evoked coordination with the USA."This coordination is very important, because it covers both what happens until a peace agreement is reached, the keeping of sanctions (...) and also the post-agreement measures, the assurance measures, so that there are sufficiently strong guarantees, because this agreement is not just a temporary phase between two wars, but it is a robust peace, which ensures both Ukraine and Europe," the president also pointed out.In this context, he highlighted that there were discussions in Paris on peace-guaranteeing forces, in the event of such an agreement."From this point of view, as I have said before, Romania will not send - and I have announced this matter as clearly as possible - any Romanian military personnel to Ukraine. But in a hypothetical situation, in which a peace agreement is reached, the possibility of a plan, of an analysis regarding the forces that could ensure such a guarantee was discussed. These forces would not reach the front line area in any form. They could be located either on the Eastern Flank, or at a great distance from the front, on the territory of Ukraine. And anyway, the transit of these forces would only be possible through Romania, at least those through the southern area. From this point of view, we will participate as a transit country, a hub, in these discussions, so that the General Staff know what these plans could be, because if such a hypothesis is reached, we can be prepared with the logistics infrastructure part", said Ilie Bolojan.   He added  that Romania's decision not to send troops to Ukraine was taken after consultations with political parties and drew attention to the fact that "all kinds of things" will be speculated about in the electoral context "to create fear, to create motivation to vote"."Our decision not to send troops to Ukraine was taken after consultations with political parties, because when you commit the country to a very important issue, it seems to me responsible to make sure that those on whom this decision depends, in this case the Romanian Parliament, have a clear position. And, therefore, there is no support for such a situation. Therefore, things are clear here and there is no point in explaining them anymore", said the acting president. He pointed out that, "being an electoral context, in the next month, until the presidential elections, all kinds of things that can be speculated, to create fear, to create motivation to vote, in one way or another, will be used"."It is a form of disinformation that I believe that those who are running, especially, but also those who are involved in campaigns, if they really care about our country, as they declare, should be very reserved about using," said Bolojan, adding that there may be other minor themes that do not bother, but with such issues it is better not to play.Romania communicated its decision and there was no problem with any of the countries, including France, he informed."I had no comments on this issue, because each country knows what its possibilities are, what its national interests are, and this is the conclusion that I announced and a matter of consistency. If you follow all the statements, you see that they are after the meetings with the political parties, because such issues are not taken by one person, but you simply have to think very carefully and have support for such a decision," Bolojan said.
