Romania in talks with EC to obtain European funding for copper exploitation development

May 5, 2025

Minister of European Investments and Projects Marcel Bolos declared on Friday in Alba Iulia that Romania is seeking European funding for the expansion of copper mining in Rosia Poieni - Alba County."For the copper mining development project we plan to obtain support under the Smart Growth, Digitalization and Financial Instruments Operational Program. In this regard, we are having talks with the European Commission so that this important project for Romania (...) can be expanded and, why not, succeed perhaps in having this important resource of Romania's processed domestically," Bolos told a press conference. He added that a package of projects is being discussed that refer both to the expansion of copper mining, but also to copper processing."Yet for processing we need to identify the investor who would be willing to invest in such an important infrastructure, both in terms of volume and complexity of the technological process. What we propose to the European Commission involves expanding mining, with the support of Cupru Min company, and, why not, also setting up the processing component also in Alba County," Bolos explained. It is not the first time that the possibility that the ore extracted from the Rosia Poieni deposit be processed in Romania instead of being sold abroad as so far, mainly to China, is being tackled, as various government officials declared along the years that investments should be supported so that the copper ore be processed in the country.Cupru Min, a company under the authority of the Ministry of Economy, has as main activity object the exploitation and delivery in specific forms of copper ore resources/reserves from the Rosia Poieni mining perimeter. The extracted copper concentrate comes from a porphyry deposit which, in addition to copper, contains other metals as well.
